2nd Annual BNW/O'Neill Jersey Shore Pro/Am

Brave New World, O'Neill and the Surfrider Foundation's Jersey Shore Chapter present the 2nd Annual Longboard Pro/Am Surfing Contest at Manasquan Inlet Beach on October 1st, 2005 (and 2nd if necessary).

The event will showcase some of the best local Longboard surfing talent in both Amateur and Professional divisions. The contest is the first in what is hoped to be an annual event on the Professional Longboard World Tour. Brave New World, the Surfrider Foundation and O'Neill have teamed up to offer a total Professional purse of $5000.00, which will be divided amongst the top finalists in 2 divisions: the Men's Open Division and the Women's Open Division.

There will also be a Longboard Amateur Surfing for Junior's Open Division (17 & under- boys and girls) and an Open Division for both Men and Women (18 & over). The entry fee is pre-register of $25.00 for Amateur and $100.00 for Professional competitors; there will be "on the beach" registration but entry fees will double!

Entry forms are available at most surf shops, Surf Taco locations and on-line at http://www.surfrider.org/jerseyshore .

The entry fee includes a full-color contest t-shirt. There will be giveaways and autograph sessions with participating professional surfers.

There is also a Team Trophy at stake. Each contestant may affiliate themselves with any surf shop - the top 2 finishers who represent same surf shop and who have the highest placing in their divisions (and the lowest combined score) will win the Team trophy.

Contest registration will start at 7:30 AM and first heat begins at 8 AM. A determination of which heats will start will be made on the night before the contest. Contestants must ride a 9' - 11' Longboard, measuring at least 3' over the contestant's head. Judging is by scoring the best-combined maneuvers, longest ride, and style.

The proceeds of this community event will benefit both the Manasquan and Point Pleasant High School Surf Teams and the Surfrider Foundation's Jersey Shore Chapter.

Please e-mail Adksurf@AOL.com for more information or call Brave New World at 732-899-8220.

Surfrider: Jersey Shore Chapter

2005 Belmar Pro

This year's surf contest will again provide us with the opportunity to raise public awareness of Surfrider's mission and the current beach and ocean issues in NJ, as well as finish the 2005 membership drive! We will also be coordinating a paddle-out on Sunday, 9/11, to memorialize the victims of the WTC tragedy.

We will need volunteers at our tent Thursday through Sunday, as well as help with contest setup and breakdown before and after the event. It's worth a day off to lend us a hand!

These events are perfect opportunities to engage the public with Surfrider's mission, our programs and what we all can do to help protect our beaches and waves. If you can spare a few hours, a day or more to help out, please contact Robin Bowden at JerseyShore@surfrider.org

'PRESS RELEASE

Former Maryland Surfer produces Ocean City Surfing Documentary.

Former Maryland resident and surfer, Will Lucas has just released a new East Coast Surfing Documentary entitled, Cruisin' Atlantic Avenue.   The DVD, which was released in mid-August, is now available in many local surf shops.  The movie spans forty years of surfing in Ocean City, Maryland , Central Florida and New England.  The movie features Ocean City Maryland early surfing pioneers, Bill Hemuth, Bryant Hungerford, Blair Rhodes and Spyder Wright. Their stories, photos and videos are entertaining and informative.  They explore the roots of surfing in the area including great information about the first surf shops.  Also featured in the movie are East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame Legends Claude Codgen, from Cocoa Beach and Pete Pan, from New England.  They both share their vintage home surf movies and stories, from the early 60's through the shortboard revolution.  Aside from vintage films and photos, the movie includes new video, informative interviews and great tunes.  The viewer is left with a great perspective of what was happening with board designs and surfing styles as longboards rapidly disappeared.  The movie ends with a travelogue up and down the East Coast, including some great footage shot at Cape Hatteras.

This is Will's second surf documentary.  The first, Waves of Reflection, was released in 2004 in cooperation with The Surfrider Foundation.  Will is donating a portion of his revenues from the first movie to the Ocean City Maryland Chapter of Surfrider in a fund specifically designated for Bill Wise, another East Coast Legend.  In spite of a 1965 surfing accident that left Bill confined to a wheel chair, for years he continued to write local surf columns and take amazing surf photos; operating his camera with his teeth.  Bill courageously shares his photos and stories in this touching movie.  Bill is still as excited about surfing today, and is an inspiration to all who know him.  Ocean City locals, Dana and George Smith share their experiences of surfing together as a married couple, and raising their children in a surf culture.  The movie also features former Delaware resident and East Coast Hall of Fame Legend Skip Savage.  Skip shares his old surf pictures and tells his story of surfing Florida's coast while he was an Airman stationed near Orlando in the 60's.  After leaving the service, Skip went on to open a shop on the Gulf Coast, and later in Rehoboth, Delaware where he was a dealer for Greg Noll and O'Hare Surfboards.

The producer, Will Lucas is a former Maryland Resident  and has been surfing since 1964.  After falling in love with the Space Coast of Florida back in the 60's, Will finally made the move from Ocean City in 2001 to escape those Ice Cream Headaches associated with winter surfing.  More information about the movies, as well as a list of local dealers can be found on line at http://www.surf64.com .
